The Termites (4)

A column of foragers -- a winged alate

The main image shows a termite colony on the move. (The artist was under the impression that termite colonies migrate to new nesting grounds...) There are only a few termite species which forage above ground, since they are specialized on cutting dry grass in the savannah, which is then transported into the nest. They are called harvester termites.

The picture on the right shows a winged alate. Only the reproductive caste has wings. The wings fall off before the royal pair digs into the ground after the nuptual flight. All workers and soldiers are wingless. Like most insects, termites have two wing pairs. However, unlike many other groups, both front and hind wings are of identical size and innervation, which gave termites their scientific name: Isoptera.
